Patrick Hawkins, a native of Virginia (USA), received his early musical education as a pianist under the guidance of Shuko Watanabe Petty in the college preparatory division of Hollins College. He later earned degrees in organ performance from the Peabody Conservatory at The Johns Hopkins University, East Carolina University, and Arizona State University. His former organ teachers include Peggy Haas Howell, Donald Sutherland, Janette Fishell, Kimberly Marshall, Carole Terry, and Cherry Rhodes. His harpsichord studies were with Shirley Matthews. In Europe he coached under Jeanne Joulain (France) and Lorenzo Ghielmi (Italy).
In 1993 Dr. Hawkins made his European debut at St. Catherine’s College at the Cambridge Summer Recitals in the United Kingdom. Since then, he has regularly returned to Europe to perform in England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. In 2013 he was invited to lecture at the 2nd International Conference on Early Keyboard Music at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland; he was a featured lecturer at the International Muzio Clementi Conference in Lucca, Italy in 2015 as well as organist in residence during 2015 at Wells Cathedral (England, UK) and St. David’s Cathedral (Wales, UK); he was a featured recitalist and lecturer at the International Muzio Clementi Conference at the University of Barcelona, Spain in 2016, and in 2023 he received a performance diploma for the first summer course of L'Arte dei Suoni - the Accademia d'organo della Valcuvia in Italy. Dr. Hawkins has appeared in the United States as soloist at four regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists and in 2014 he performed a square piano recital for the National Conference of the Historic Keyboard Society of North America (HKSNA) held at the National Music Museum in Vermillion, South Dakota. He has been heard in recital at such major venues as the Washington National Cathedral, St. Thomas 5th Avenue in New York, Trinity Church Copley Square in Boston, St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, St. James Episcopal in Los Angeles, the Cathedral of Mary our Queen in Baltimore, River Road Baptist in Richmond, and Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta. Dr. Hawkins is a former Dean of the Greater Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and also former Organist and Director of Chapel Music at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He is currently the Organ Instructor at the University of South Carolina School of Music. He also serves as the full-time organist at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Columbia, a dynamic parish of over 3,000 members.
"The temptation with Haydn (and by extension his contemporaries) is to become almost robotic in technical demands; Hawkins is fluid, studied, and steadied, and breathes living qualities into these works." Jasper magazine, May/June 2015
"Hawkins...brings sureness of touch and a clear sense of affection to all three instruments (square pianos)..." Early Music America, March 2017
